It’s that time of year again! As you know, Knightswood Secondary School has been successfully donating food to Glasgow North West food bank, based in Blawarthill Church, Millbrix Avenue, for the past two years. Our contributions have made a substantial difference in the lives of some of the most vulnerable families in our local community. We are giving parents the chance to feed their families at what is meant to be the happiest time of the year. This year we would like to donate even more, especially since the use of food banks has increased by over 200% in the last three years. However, this is impossible without your continued support! During the week beginning 23rd of November, KSS are having a food bank drive. There will be a variety of fund raisers throughout the week including; Staff vs Pupil football game (boys), Staff vs Pupil netball game (girls), Pupils will make and sell cakes during break and lunch. Guess the weight of the Xmas cake. Stall at the Christmas Fayre. Donations made via tutor classes. Please feel free to contribute to any of the above and send your child into school one day this week with either an item from the shopping list below or a 20p donation. Dear Parent/carer, You may be aware of media reports today about the intention of elected members in Glasgow City Council’s administration to reinstate free home school transport to the original criteria eligibility – 1.2 miles for primary pupils and 2.2 miles for secondary pupils. Their decision has been taken following a cost of the school day project carried out across the city and to try to reduce some financial pressures on some families that could impact on a child’s access to learning. The formal decision to do this will be taken at a council committee in due course. In the meantime, we will now work with our colleagues in SPT to tender and secure travel and bus arrangements in due course. We will be starting to identify the new P1 and S1 pupils who will qualify for free home school transport in anticipation of the formal decision being taken. We will keep pupils and their families updated with information on timescales as the process to secure the new arrangements will take some weeks. Regards Fiona Ross, Public Relations Officer - Education, Public Relations & Marketing, Glasgow City Council
Please note that the 2015/16 Clothing Grant/Free School Meal application form is now available on the GCC website.
Glasgow City Council are rolling out a savings programme to encourage more young people to save for their future. The initiative includes a free £10 deposit when a young person opens a Credit Union account. Every pupil will receive their own pass book to monitor how much they have saved. To make it easier for the pupils to do this Knightswood Secondary has paired up with Yoker Credit Union to open their very own Credit Union in the school. Pupils can open an account and deposit savings in their account every Monday during lunchtime, next to the office. Pupils can deposit money in cash or cheque form. Pupils cannot withdraw money from their account in school, they need to go to Yoker Credit Union on a Thursday, before 9pm to do this.
The National Parent Forum of Scotland has produced Revision in a Nutshell guides for the new Highers (20 subjects) and updated Revision guides for National 5s (20 subjects). These revision guides contain direct links to SQA specimen question papers, exemplar question papers plus past question papers, where appropriate. The guides advise learners to check with their teachers to make sure that material is relevant. The guides are primarily intended to provide the SQA direct links by subject in one place, and to give some additional revision opportunities.
